Call for rank and file vote in newcastle

RUNNING for the job of newcastle's head coach has not been easy, however it has had its moments and the last time Newcastle were in the Top 14 was 2008 against Brighton and Hove Albion, who they beat 5-0 with a goal by Scott Sinclair.

However it is a challenge no Newcastle fan wants to face. In 2007 they would be underdogs against Liverpool at Anfield and there were doubts about Alan Pardew's ability to deliver a top-four performance.

But as they started to climb the table under Alan Pardew they improved significantly and became the team with their best Premier League start to date.

Newcastle's first win of the season came over Bournemouth on a night when they conceded only one goal. As they drew 3-3 at Stoke, Pardew felt they needed a bit of support from a backline that included Ashley Williams, Michael Carrick and Papiss Cisse.

With Cisse and Williams at each post, and an injured Crouch at left-back, it was a perfect balance.

Newcastle came to life and managed to go ahead with 12 minutes left before substitute Scott Simpson, a late substitute after a corner, found a way past goalkeeper Sam Byram.

However Crouch's strike set them up for a second and with time running out they could see out the remaining games.

But Newcastle were unable to build on a performance that saw them defeat Stoke and draw with Wigan to complete a top-four finish without winning a game.

Their final day's performances were more than decent but this was a club that will probably remember the 4-0 thrashing at Liverpool.

Newcastle will continue to work hard to find the missing balance in the squad while Pardew looks to improve as head coach.

Pardew says he wants to improve as a coach

Newcastle's owner Mike Ashley had initially asked for six players in their squad last summer before the signings of Ashley Williams and Tom Carroll.

This season, with the likes of Ayoze Perez and Adam Bogdan still awaiting their first professional game, Ashley has opted for a smaller squad with only five players.

Ashley also wants a younger player in their starting line-up this season than they were last.

At 34, the player would be the youngest player from any English club to start a Premier League match.

Ayoze Perez was signed by Ashley, who gave the midfielder a training ground contract last summer after he left Bournemouth as they were at the bottom of the league, and he was the Premier League's second top scorer in August.

South african writer andre brink dies aged 79 reports say

A former British columnist for the Evening Standard has died aged 79.

Gladys Leigh died of a heart attack at her home in Hulme, Yorkshire, on Wednesday night.

Her husband Alan, a former Daily Mirror journalist, said Ms Leigh worked as a columnist from 1966-70 for The Sun. She left the newspaper in 1972 but began writing for a weekly newspaper and the Evening Standard, as the Standard.

Mr Leigh said she was "one of the country's finest and most gifted journalists".

"She has done more with a single letter than is possible in any other line of writing and this is a record which cannot and will not be repeated," he told the Sunday People newspaper.

An emotional David Cameron said he was "stunned" by Ms Leigh's passing.

He described her "exceptionally passionate" writing style and said there was no one better to contribute to the national debate.

"She has left a legacy for her children to live on," Mr Cameron said.

His office is holding a public memorial service in her memory on Monday, and his colleague Mark Steyn, a former writer and former editor of the Sunday Mirror newspaper, will host the event.

Ms Leigh was described as "intensely opinionated".

Her husband, who was an old friend of the pair from their days with the Sun, wrote to the Sunday Times in 2012 saying the couple shared the same passion.

But when he was asked whether they had ever disagreed, he told the paper he "never really argued" against the war.

'Rampant racism'

After working for the Daily Mirror until the 1970s she came to the defence of the newspaper's editor at the time, Paul Dacre, accusing him of "racial bigotry", in a piece published in The Daily Telegraph in February that was criticised for "pandering to racist elements in public life".

Mr Dacre also accused the paper of covering up the existence of a secret police unit set up in Britain to control the "illegal black diaspora" that he said had grown in London with the help of the Mail on Sunday.

The Daily Mirror said it retracted the article and a copy of it was given to Ms Leigh's family and she had since spoken out about the incident.

BBC Newsnight's reporter Andrew Miah said the Daily Mirror had withdrawn the article but not the letter of apology it had written to her.

The piece, he added, was "about how difficult life can be for those of us from the white working-class families who don't have access to welfare in some of the most deprived areas".
