This story has been updated to reflect additional confirmation that Kostopoulos will be sentenced in his home country. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
The Kostopoulos case was one of seven major drug trafficking cases brought to trial in connection with the drug trade in the city of Mexico in 2014. All seven were eventually convicted and sentenced to life in prison. The other seven were acquitted.
The court initially said that Kostopoulos had pleaded not guilty to all 11 drug trafficking charges, but that decision was reversed when an appellate court overturned that ruling. The court ruled that Kostopoulos had lied about his intentions to assist the U.S. government in a serious crime.
"That's exactly what they want. They wanted him to lie, they wanted him to deny he had done the crime, but that's what he's trying to do," said Thomas G. Brennan, attorney for three defendants in that case who received federal prison sentences in 2016. "It's their way or the highway. It's all about them."
The case has generated a new round of defense and defense lawyers, both from the U.S. government and from Mexico's Justice Department, who were hoping for a clear answer about how the defendants' attorneys are handling the case. </a&g t; ;
